Comparison of CETEX PP Construction fibers with Others

Material of composition:- The material of Fiber is very important for technical application like construction. CETEX Construction Fibers are Polypropylene (PP), which is most preferred material for Fiber Reinforced Concrete (FRC). The international code for usage of fiber in concrete ASTM - C1116/ C- 1116M-06 clearly mentions Polypropylene (PP) as durable in concrete (refer Note 3, para 4.1.3.).

Advantages of Using PP for reinforcement of concrete are :-

PP is stable in alkaline condition of concrete. In concrete Calcium Hydroxide i.e. (Ca(OH)2) is liberated. This is highly alkaline in nature with a pH of 13.5. Also because of the heat hydration of cement, the temperature goes much above 66OC particularly. This leads to deterioration of polyester (an ester) fiber in long run.

Polypropylene is the lightest synthetic polymer. Hence the count of fiber for a given weight is maximum in case of polypropylene. It is 52% lighter than polyester and 26% lighter than nylon and acrylic.

Long length fibers for concrete makes each and every strand effective:- In a concrete mix design, almost 45% or above are large stone chips (also called MII or coarse aggregate) whose average size is around 19mm. If fiber used in concrete mix has length of 19mm or below, then chances are that some fibers will completely stick on large aggregate lengthwise and become part of the aggregate. These stuck fibers won’t play any role in bonding or holding the aggregates together.In order to ensure that each and every strand play an active role in reinforcement, the minimum length of fibers should be at least 2-3 mm longer than the maximum size of aggregate in concrete mix.

High Aspect ratio(ratio of length and diameter):-It is well known fact that for Fiber reinforced concrete, higher aspect ratio results in better reinforcement. Moreoverlong length fibers hold more number of aggregates together, thereby providing better reinforcement. CETEX CPP24 has diameter of 28 micron (approx.), hence it has aspect ratio of 860 (approx.). which is highest in industry. These fibers undergo special surface treatment for proper dispersion in concrete mix. ( Refer test report of BTRA)
